Lost to Hammer-BS from Andoria 9-2 in backgammon :( (the last game ended up worth 4 points, that's why it was so lopsided).  
I guarentee a better showing next time, when i'm not up against the backgammon guild master.

She got the better start, but I had some decent draws, and she made a few mistakes to let me pull ahead in the middle.  Then when I got a dreadfull draw, and she got a perfect one I thought it was lost, but I got a few good draws at the end and she got a few terrible ones and I was able to pull ahead.

She was a really good sport to play late at night her time (we were both online at the same time earlier but neither of us realized it).

Don't sweat it.  Bromios and I will 'pick you up'.  (That's a term from Baseball.  When someone makes an out or a mistake, etc. and the next guy does well on the next At Bat, the first player will say 'Way to pick me up' (i.e. I feel better about messing up last play because you did well.))

We are tied up on this one Brom.  Time for some clutch hitting from us on this one.  (I'm in a baseball frame of mind for some reason today.)  ???

Speaking of Clutch Hitting, way to go Jo and DQ.  Those last two wins at the end gave us our 3rd win of the season, over Reflection. ;D

Sadly for me I've been moved to pitching this year on my college's team, rather than hitting.  So in case you guys wanted terms that pitchers use... I'll make sure to "slam the door" "seal the deal" and "blow it by them" in this next city league match.

When we found each other online and decided to play right then I went directly to our room, and kia joined me there before I realized 7Heaven was technically the host for the match.  Don't hear me complaining.  I left the choice of bo1 or bo3 up to kia, who chose bo3.

I hadn't played any CI in a week or two and perhaps predictably started off in questionable fashion.  I even commented in our citychat (time stamps are PST = GMT-8):

-fourth game was one big race (no one got hit), but because he  is german... the dice favored him
-game five he doubles.. after having a good opening two roles so i accept and redouble (at this point i've got an advanced anchor).  Then he (no joke) roles 5 doubles in a row!  And I see the impending defeat ahead of me.

This just means lady luck will be on my side some other time :-)

That makes us 3-1-2 (Win-Tie-Loss) for the season.  We are still in the same clump of teams near the top and we are two games ahead in 3 out of the 4 teams we are currently playing.

Still not sure quite what happened in game 1.  I got so far behind, that even a perfect draw that would allow me to go from 2 tiles to out would leave me behind, so I make some stalling moves to hope for a bigger miracle.  He draws a wild, and I can still go out, but even with the 16 I would earn and his 20 point penalty, I would lose 112 to 113.

My phenomenal run of bad games in the city league continues. :( I lost TA to Kiriaade of MagicTown.

I won the first game 13-0 due to some great fortune, then lost the second game 0-11 due to a reversal of that fortune. I had a decent lead in the third game, 8-2, but I made a couple small mistakes and she had excellent city draws the last two games to take the win.

I need more St.P games against inexperienced opponents -- that's the one match I won. ;)

We don't have a game vs Reflection this week, due to death of one of their players per LA.  I need to pull out my German translater to see what is going on on their board.

Speaking of payback...  Jo (CS), coolala (StP), szwanger (CCE), Flo (EG), Esterio (LG), and Elttil (SS) is on deck for Chinatown.  These guys beat us the first time around, but they are playing in our house now and we have some good matchups now that we pick the games.  Good Luck!

Well, maralena died of a Heart attack following an illness. It was a little of both, we knew she wasnt too well, but we were all shocked by her death.
I left a message in the reflection forum to say goodbye to her, and wrote in the name of EC as well.

Here i was, being grumpy cause it was so early and i wasnt even fully awake yet, when i saw my city league opponent from china town logging in.
Well, i asked him if he had time to play and he had. We agreed on the unique option, which i thought would work as an advantage for me.
Well the first two games i was so unlucky that i cant even remember if i had closed a rope at all...so after the score was 2-0 for pyhuang (playing bo5 luckily) i lost pretty much all hope to win this game.
The third game i won rather clearly, but the 4th was VERY close. But...I won ;)
SO it came to the big finale: 5th game..i think i have never been so nervous before a cant stop game ever.
But i won the game with 3 ropes to 1 so...to make a long story short:

I lost my SJ match against coyote74 of Andoria. :(

He wanted best-of-1 (which always makes me suspicious) and then proceeded to get all the breaks at the beginning of the game. His gold mine paid off the first three times: city hall, palace, city hall! grrrr Mine paid off once near the end of the game. I was at least 3 buildings ahead of him and I had the crane so I kept upgrading my cheap buildings but I couldn't find anything worthwhile -- no 5-point monument, no city hall (which he spent at one point so I knew it was in the deck), no guild hall. I had a library and prefecture so I kept choosing Mayor and sifting through 8 cards, but like Yukon Cornelius of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, I got nuthin'.

Another loss, this one against HCA of Chinatown in StreetSoccer.  :(  Of course, he has a winning percentage of 69% and an ELO of almost 1500, so it wasn't a surprise. I could have asked for best-of-1 to help my chances, but I'm too noble for that.  ;)  I won the first game thanks to some great dice rolls, but that luck went his way the other two games. Good dice plus excellent position gave him easy wins in the last two games. I'm pretty sure I learned some new tricks from him so I'm ready to play again when needed.

Paul, i didnt want to criticize you *smiles* i was just surprised. You and Greg both do a great job and invest so much time, especially with you family. And with the added disadvantage of the time difference there was NO way that you could have wrote that email before that guy asked me *g* so dont worry :)

Fell way behind in game 1, but made some risky plays and got some lucky draws for the come from behind victory.  Game 2 I started with all women and it was a very slow developing game, but I got better tiles (lots of wilds) in the mid-game and built up an insurmountable lead.

Looks like I'm just climbing up the ladder this weekend.  First was Hammer-BS 1402 ELO (#92 with an impressive 70.59 winning %), then Ingoschi at 1408 (#84).  Next up are DJSunshine at 1415 (#73), and the real prize will be Sir_Dooth with a 1500 ELO (#15) and an unreal 600 of 819 record (73.26 winning%).

I guess I haven't played many high ranked players as my 62 of 93 (66.67%) has only earned me a 1346 ELO thus far (#218)

Coincidentally, Sir_Dooth has won 6 medals in SoloSanktPetersburg (my solo game of choice), and Hammer-BS recently put up the third best all time score of 1898 which  I expect will win the gold for January.

Enough bragging and statistic-checking.  I think I'll go practice.

As I was finishing up my commentary following the Ingoschi match LifeLine signed on.  Since I had failed to mention him at all, I thought for sure I would be handed a karmic defeat.  I had cent luck throughout, and great draws at the end of each game made up for my mistakes, and pulled out a win in "straight sets".  It must have been Jocelyn25 and puppet Xanadu's cheering that balanced out my inflated ego and let lady luck smile on the Emerald.City.

As LA said, we are out of the city cup.  We made it to the final 16 which is darn good. ;D We almost had PC, LA's game was close on the tie breaker and I was up 10-2 or 10-1 in my TA game and I couldn't close the deal. :(  

The cup will be ours someday.  I can smell it. ;D

On the other hand the league is still going on.  We have only match left and I just heard from MagicTown that the games they picked are BG, LG, DV, LC, CS, SP  LA and I will match that up with players shortly.

I just wanted to say, reguardless of how this finishes up, that I think everyone has done a great job.  Without going back to my first post, the goal I had for the team was 5th place.  It was (I thought) a good goal that we could make considering the strengths of last year's team and the new Munchkins that we added in the off-season.  One of my favorite quotes is: Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.  I thought it would be a good idea to set a goal and see if we could make it.

However, to be right in there fighting for one of the top spots is really great and everyone deserves a pat on the back.  Everyone has done a great job, reguardless of how many games you won or loss.  If you are not happy with your record I guarantee that you are facing some really hard players and if we had someone better to play that game, we would schedule him/her and give you some easier players (because no one likes losing).

Sorry if this goes on for a bit, over the past weeks I have got some comments from players, who have lost about as many games as they won, who wondered if they were helping the team or not.  I know it is hard to see from your angle, but this is a 'team sport' and it would be a loss to us if any one of us was not here.

All that said, we have a few more games to finish.  Let's see if we can finish up strong and keep this high spot.

After my player jumped from the baseline I complained because I thought it was a bug. Believe me, I was prepared to yell at this guy once back in the dressing room after the game... ;D. I was ready to sack him!

Flöhli's season is done now.  If I had one thing I could change, I would have scheduled a few more games for you.  Still you had a good season at 4-4.  LA and I scheduled some hard EG players for you.

Also, thanks this season to ratpfink and reikja who did some pitch hitting for us.  So with Esterio, szwanger and SpaceSquirrel also in the club house that makes 6 players done and 8 still on the board. :)

Jo just couldn't stop in Can't Stop with a 9-3 record.  Jo was smoking just about everyone.

pine was 7-5, but 6-3 in Ligretto.  Filling in in CI and LC.

DQ was 8-6 this season.  DQ was one of those players who had to play games EC generally doesn't play much.  Street Soccer (4-4) and Lost Cities (3-2) and one game of CCE.

Only Elttil, PW, LA, coolala and Brom on the board.

Finally played my StP match vs Aristobulus of DragonTown, but I lost 1-2.  :(  Horrid luck with the noble upgrades in the second and third game. >:(

I'll play my final match vs. Sallie on Thursday.

The DragonTown match is done. Ended 6-6 so we get a point for the draw. Paul lost his SJ game, so we also finish 6-6 against 7Heaven.

The VOICES match is still in the balence. Currently 4-4, with Elttil playing StP against Sallie on Thursday, and Paul playing TA against lucy111.

DQ's win and my win makes us 6-2 up over MagicTown. The remainign games are StP (coolala - BrunoBraunbart) and BG (Bromios - Brisby)

Now that LA is done, I wanted to give him a pat on the back as well.  I think the two of us worked out well together.  I am technically listed as captain of the team (I had to pick someone) and LA as the Assistant Captain (or whatever it translates to), but I always tried to make sure that I didn't hold that over LA's head and usually deferred to LA when we disagreed.  Next season we will swap, assuming we both do it again (at least I plan too).

Thanks for all your help LA on a great job.  I sure couldn't have done it without you.  Not only that, but as a captain, if we are caught in a pinch, we usually schedule the worse games for ourselves.  LA finished 8-7-1 playing CS, SJ, DV :P and a bit of BG.  Great job.

Side Note: Elttil how did you do this and the Mayor's job last season?!?  You must have been busy!  :o

In the standings, we are guaranteed a top 3 finish, congrats!  The top three currently are:

Reality-Town 30 points (3 matches to play)
Emerald City 27 points (2 matches to play)
LasVegas     23 points (3 matches to play)

We have at least tied MagicTown as well, so that's 28 points for us.  The most LasVegas can get is 29 points.  So we need a win by (coolala or Bromios) and a win by (Elttil or PaulW) to lock 2nd place.  Elttil and I both winning would do it too.  Even if we don't get that, Vegas has to just about win all its matches to catch us.

Still even if Vegas should catch us we still have a top 3 finish and we will be moving up to League 1.   Hopefully we will have everyone back next season.  I would like to keep the team together for next season and see where we stand against the big boys.

The second game was anti-climatic because she made a mistake early that changed the whole game. I had one more worker so she cleared an extra spot to try and get even in the upcoming worker phase, but I was going first. I was shocked when she put the extra card into her hand, and she immediately saw the mistake. By the 4th turn I was earning $9 more in the worker phase, so it was smooth sailing from there. Getting nice upgrades from my observatory helped too. I built 11 nobles in both games so this was completely opposite of my prior match with Aristobulus where I never got more than 8.

I'm now done for the year, and pleased that I was able to turn things around somewhat in the second half and gets some wins for EC. :)


I think both PaulW and Lardarse have done a great job this season, and our position in the standings shows it!  :D  Thanks for both of you for all your work and I hope that you're both willing to continue.


I didn't play much outside of league games.  ;)

Elttil's win gives EC another point in the standings to 29 points (we at least tie VOICES).  LasVegas can only tie us now. :D

Elttil was 7-10 for the season playing 6 different games.  Elttil filled the hard role that DQ, LA and I did, mostly playing games that no one else did: SS, TA, DV and filled in for a BG game.  However, when Elttil got to play games he normally plays on BSW (StP and SJ) he was 7-3 and filled in nicely in StP when coolala and Esterio was away.  Elttil was key player for us during that time. :)

Now that everyone is finished, I would like to give you all one last 'Great Job!'.  8)

I know that a number of people have thanked LA and I for a great job being co-captains.  Thanks for the complement, but I think LA and I had little to do with our success.  The best LA and I can do is crunch a few numbers and try to set up matches in which we think we can win 4 out of 6 and half the time we can't even do that.  The other team gets to pick the games we they are home.  The best we can do is send out the best player we have for that game who is not too busy at the time.

In the end we got to second place, because you guys and gals won games.  We were 6 wins, 3 losses and 4 ties when we were the away team (for city cup and league games).  That's the other team picking our weakest games and their strongest games.  LA and I can do nothing but send out our best players for those games and hope for the best.

When LA and I have players who can do that, going 9 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties when home is darn easy to setup. 8)  Never mess with a Munchkin on their home court. >:( ;)

We had a team of 12 this season.  However, EC has grown almost 25% in population since the start of this season.  Looking over the new additions and adding reikja (who had computer problems for better then half of the season), I can easily see 4 or 5 more people who might want to play next season.  Maybe we will even add a few more Munchkins before the start of the season.  Plus, there is a number of Munchkins who played in past seasons, but not in this one.

If we get to around 17-18 Munchkins or so, then we might have to recruit a few more to get a team of 11 or 12 to play in league 1 and start a new team with 8 players or so.  However, that is a problem LA (if he wants to captain next season) and I will figure out when the time comes.  If the number stays around 12-ish, then we keep one team and show that Emerald City belongs with the best cities in BSW.  8)
