Dear people,
I´m doing my exam in German linguistics about (basic) taste adjectives
in different languages. I have to research if and which taste adjectives
(like sweet, sour, etc., maybe) do exist.
I would appreciate it, if you could help me with that by writing down
all taste adjectives you can find in your language with the English
translation and please mark, if it is a basic taste adjective, which
means: not derivated (from a noun or so like e.g. "salzig" = Salz + ig
in German) and please mark if the word is borrowed from another language
or if you would like to add any comments, feel free to do so.
Of course it wuld be very interesting to find new, but existing words
like umami, which define a taste we e.g. in Germany do not have. If you
have such a not "common" taste adjective in your language please write
it down also.
The next step of my thesis is not yet very developed since it seems t be
very difficult. Namely I want to try if there is a prototype for every
basic taste adjective like we already have e.g for color adjectives (if
we hear red, we imagine one special red and according to theory
everybody imagines the same (but of course this unrelated to clothes etc
where we imagine another type of red).
Well, in any case I´m thinking about how to find out if there is THE
product or whatever we all associate with, sweet, sour, bitter and so on.
The theorists of the basic color terms used color panels and the
probants had to point their best red, blue etc. Maybe you could think
about what do you associate with the best product of sweet, sour and so
on...I thesis would be, that maybe this is also related to country and
eating culture in this specific country which the people call the "best
sweet thing"....
Well, I´m gladful if you want to help me and I appreciate every language
you have as mother tongue or you learned etc...
Many many thanks
Jasmin
