"pumpkineater" (level 3) skipped out on a 4-player PR game while in a losing position. He didn't say anything, he just left. As of 20 minutes later, he hasn't logged back on yet. (We got someone else to finish the game).

I came to think. Every now and then, there are problems with unregistered users. Is it possible to make the town only accessible to registered users? That would solve a few issues and further encourage people to make a profile, and not keep playing without one.

Stony -

Regarding unregistered players, Boomer is correct - there is nothing we can do about them.  I cannot bann them from the town if they do something wrong and there is no way to pre-bann anyone.

There are a lot of drawbacks playing against unregistered users as have been discussed in great detail periodically - from frequent leaving and fouling up of games to other more subtle things such as their games do not count toward medals (if this is a concern for you).  Most advice is that you do not play against such people at all.

This is up to you.  However, it is good to remember what it was like the first time you logged in to BSW.  I know for me, I hesitated to register because I was concerned my name would end up on a list and I would get even more spam than I already do.  I played a couple of games and decided to register.  Registering is not a hard thing to do, but it was not entirely obvious to me at first.  When I encounter unregistered players, I try to encourage them to register, especially if I encounter them on more than one occasion.  Usually an explanation of the levels and commands such as the ability to reset a game is enough to get people to join.  Sometimes an intro to the meta game works too.

It is your call if you want to play against an unregistered user, but it is not a bad idea to strike up a conversation and see what type of person you are dealing with.  You may encourage a great player and future citizen of ET to register themselves on BSW.   Cool Grin Cool

Per ATrain, banning stogie21 for a week due to continuous dropping of CC games.  If anyone else has had this problem with this player, please let me know.  I will bann him for a month as this may be an issue with this individual.

I'd like to report checkmate ( id 71156 ) for quitting a game of Carcassonne.

I can post a screendump on request.

I really hesitate to do this, but I am at least putting the information here so we have it.  Nongsao - a W18 from NewIsland - bailed on a game of Attika with me.  It has been 15 minutes since she went offline.  I have the following transcript:

Nongsao: i am very bad and still lerning
Nongsao: ok?
daveb02: np
Nongsao: please play gentle with me
Nongsao: dont kill me after 4 minutes ;-)
daveb02: ok
Nongsao muss zurück ins reale Leben
-- Nongsao is not logged in.
-- Name 'Nongsao' added to watchlist.
-- Jencoco is not logged in.
-- Twingoline is not logged in.
-- marie0910 is not logged in.
-- Chocobaer is not logged in.
-- GroßerBär is not logged in.

Nongsao left after whe turned a land tile over and I put my harbor on it and laid another tile next to the land tile she laid.  I do not know how to copy the screen, but I understand she is new at the game as she said.  I did not cutoff or attempt to cutoff anything she had moving into that new land tile.  When I placed my harbor, she left.  I added her name to my watch list.  I checked to see if any of the officials from her town were online - they are not.

I don't want to make a big issue of this but I am not pleased to have such complaints come my way.  Nothing discourteous, but clearly a bail on a position they were not happy with, but is still winnable and playable.

I am going to be online here for the next few hours although I will not be in BSW.  I am betting Nongsao does not return to BSW tonight to finish my game.

I am banning her for 1 week.

Mikey-Flies (W8, Armfeld) intentionally quit a Puerto Rico game 15-Feb-05 due to bad position.  I generally give the benefit of the doubt, but this is the third time I personally have seen this.  He announces his intention to leave, so it's not network problems.

Vladimir (W17, Armfeld), lance(W0), and kljman (W14, ET) were witness.  Vladimir claimed to have seen identical behavior from Mikey-Flies in the past.

Screenshots are available if needed.

banned until ET receives a request to re-enter - daveb02 - these 1 week banns do not seem to be doing much good.

I think one week is too short too. Most players won't even discover that they have been banned. I think offenders should get a month. It's not like they can't play at all, they just can't play in ET, and what is the point of banning, if they do not even discover they have been so?

Even better. They should be put on ban permanently, until they take contact with ET. Then we know that the message got through. If they don't take contact, they probably don't care.

I had "kingmissile" (level 0) run away from a CCJuS game when I was starting to pull ahead. He logged off and hasn't returned online in over ten minutes. Yeah, there may not be much to do about level 0's, but I figured I'd mention the name anyway.

Does ET have a policy regarding blatant kingmaking?  Not the screwed into picking a winner kind, but the type where the player gives up before the game is over and decides to collude with another.

I find this behavior to be even more disruptive than someone bailing on a game.  After a replacement is found, a game can continue normally, but this behavior is intended to wreck a game...it's much like tossing the gameboard in the air.

The offender in question is an ET noble, and even announced their intentions.  Personally, I think allowing such behavior from ranking ET citizens could reflect badly upon us.

In a perfect world we would have a policy for things like this.  We don't live in a perfect world.

Having the town police, "game strategy" and "game decisions" is a very very slippery slope.  I think the risks far outweigh any possible benefit.

I think the only sensible method is players must decide who they will game with and who they will not.  Just like in reall life.

I agree that certain plays can be more annoying then someone leaving a game.  All I can say is don't play with that person again.

I think we should reserve banned and kicking people out of town for abusive behavior.

[Hope Rico don't mind.]
Seems not the time to name names by whichever methods including by eliminations, unless paeanblack wishes to. What the most interesting is the meaning behind that incident, especially what behaviours should have actions taken against.

The best I could guess on the incident is that the game was probably PR but the same things applies to all games except Millionaire played in game shows ^ ^. And I could say that, which is concluded from one of my ftf game group in which I have to play 1 vs 4, PR is a game that the winner is determined by the weakest player among those strongest. Trapping the less able ones in order to have them plays for you is also a part of gaming. (2er game "Go" is the perfect example in BSW, mightbe LM of "Go" could explain far better than me.) However, nobody is expected to play extreme seriously. Neither nobody is demanded to play bold enough to include trapping strategy.

Everybody may have different ways to enjoy the games and choosing who you play with is the most promising way to have you most enjoyed in here. Just like what Boomer has said, it is same to the real life.

Personally I disagree to take any action to the "blatant kingmaking" unless cheating is proved with evidence. Everybody has different strategies and different interpretation to the same situations. Nobody could define what strategy is "normal" and force others to compile. Most time the best playing converges from chaotic playing.

I fully comprehend the feeling of peaenblack. I thought that the player in question did not mind his/her words only. paeanblack, how about discussing with that player a week later? I would be happy to be the mediator, especially when the game in question is PR. Smiley
