I was speaking to a player recently who had been considering EC. He eventually decided on joining a different city. The main thing he mentioned that led him that way was that the other city let him in on their /ctell chat, so he could meet the citizens. I didn't know that this was even possible. Apparently it is. All that is required is for one of the city officers to be on (instructions below). Once it is done, the person can hear our /ctell until we kick them out, they leave it, or the server restarts.

Another thing is that you can now have a banner that is visible to ARMFelders who are playing in your city. I don't know the details about it, just that it is a gif. I think that if we had one of these banners it might help get our name out there.

Does anyone want to volunteer to make such a banner?
How do people feel about inviting prospective Munchkins into our /ctell?

Directions for inviting:
The highest ranked town officer just types "/makeoper" into the /ctell window. Then they type "/invite <name>" to invite the guest to our /ctell. The guest then types "/channel Emerald.City" in their main window. To univite them, we just "/uninvite <name>" or maybe we "/chkick <name>".

About the chat:
I don't mind if there is an invited person for a limited period in our city chat. Under the condtion he or she is someone who is interested in becoming a citizen of EC. I just would like to know beforehand, to avoid making mean comments about a person in the city chat unaware of her/him reading them.....  Grin

About the city banners:
I have turned them off, because I found them quite annoying. I prefer to have this little extra space on my screen   Wink
Right now I do not have time to work on it, but I might be able to do it next month or so if nobody else wants to do it (provided I get inputs on what we want).

City Chat
I think it's fine to invite someone who's interested in EC into the city chat. There should definitely be a message posted letting everyone who's on know there is a guest present so we can be on our best behavior. Wink A way to handle this would be for interested players to have an EC citizen as a sponsor. The sponsor would be responsible to post a message in the chat about the guest and notify any munchkins that join while the guest is on. If the sponsor leaves, then the guest should exit the chat or be adopted by another sponsor. I doubt this will be a major issue, but it'd be nice to have a few guidelines.

Banners
I just heard about them too, but I haven't seen any. How do you turn them on/off, and who has one that we can see? Do they display all the time, even when you're in a game? If they take up space on the screen during a game, then I'd certainly want the ability to turn it off. I play games like Funkenschlag full screen and still have to scroll. It's sounds like a cool idea, but I wouldn't want to annoy anyone -- especially myself.  Grin

If life is a game, God made it a quite complexe one. He must have had a hard time working it out. The big question is: if it IS a game, shouldnt we take the small things less serious and have some fun?

/city banner:  dont use them cause they limit my game area
on screen. but nice to have, especially for ARMfeldes who
are still looking for a nice place to settle down...

so on my opinion we should have one. as far as i know, any
player can choose or avoid them on screen, so having one
would do no harm...  Wink

/invite: one of the things i appreciated most was the non-formal
habit of joining EC. we do not have a procedure
that makes candidates wait for unanimous approval.
still small, we use to know each other. at least,
most of us do.  Grin

open mind probably means open city channel, too. but i am
with Don and Elttil - there should be some information about
new candidates on the ctell, so all of us can have a
closer look on them, while EC is growing... and how Smiley

Hi folks,

a few remarks concerning the CityBanners:

You activate them with

CityBanner = EAST

or

CityBanner = WEST

in your prop.

To avoid a smaller games-part of your window you have to enlarge your window a little bit. In my prop I have got the following data:

WinHeight = 540
WinWidth = 700

Technical data for banner-preparation:

format: gif
width: 48 pixels
height: Best check out and test it
name: C41.gif
You would have to send it to ARMistice via e-mail

A good banner for all windows (full screen as well as normal height) is the banner of Midgard (C23), because the information are on the part which is always on and the grafik are expanded for the full screen as well. Therefore you have always a complete banner.

Many cities have banners now, so if you go around after changing your prop you won't have a problem finding some.

Cheers

For those of you who are concerned with strangers being in the /ctell and you not knowing it, you can find out who is in the /ctell by typing /chwho in the /ctell window.

Using the /chwho command always makes me feel like I'm going to sneeze, so I created a function key. In case anyone's not aware, you can define function keys to carry out commands in channel windows by putting "C-" in front of the key definition. I put this in my .prop file:

Code:
C-FKey1 = */chwho

So I press F1 to see who's in a channel, and avoid sneezing.  Grin

City Chat: I agree with what has been said. As long as I know we have a guest that's ok. Anyhow, I don't think that hordes of  foreigners will start spaming our citychat  Smiley And to be sure of that I will just sneeze every now and then  Roll Eyes

Banner: I've tried them once and they're nice to see, but I feel they take up too much space for me. So personally I'm not too interested in them, but I guess they might be good advertisement for EC. So go on Don, you're offer is accepted  Grin

So this is what I have so far: http://www.math.duke.edu/~robbins/ecbanner.gif or,
http://www.math.duke.edu/~robbins/ecbanner2.gif it's not very fancy, but I just ran it off in a couple of minutes. What do you think?

 Cheesy Thanks Nicias!
I prefer the second proposal. I think the font looks better with this background and it is just great to have a real yellow brick road in our banner.

P.S. I didn't have time to work on something myself yet. I planned a similar banner anyway.

Two thumbs up for the second one!  The text is a little easier to read on the first one, but the cleverness of the yellow brick road makes the second one a sure-fire winner. If there were someway to outline the text over the yellow bricks (such as in black) that may help, but I have no idea how easy that is to do.

Now all we need is to add Dorothy, Toto, the scarecrow, the cowardly lion, and the tin man skipping down the path.  Grin

The banner is now up! Check it out by putting

CityBanner = East
or
CityBanner = West

in your .prop file!

New banner looks great.  Cool

Does anyone know what the EAST or WEST setting is supposed to do? The banner appears on the right side of my window no matter what the setting. Since the wicked witches were from the East and West, I changed my setting to North which is where Glinda the good witch is from, but the banner still appeared along the right edge.  Huh
