Hi munchkins,

Ever since we started the thread about the Emerald room i have been thinking about how to improve the use of our game rooms. Don then said something about maybe a competition or tournament.
Well, why dont we make a tichu marathon? we already have a couple of players who would do the start and could also play at various times. I already looked in the tichu guild forum to see if they sponsor such an event and they do.
What do you think of this? We could also organise competitions for munchkins only, where you have to play several games and the points will be added.
I cant wait to hear your opinions on this.

Gotta rush to work now.

Hello,

While organizing a Tichuuuuuuu-marathon may be a good idea (although not a very original one, considering how many such marathons in other cities there have been and are already), I don't think our Tichu rooms are the ones which are used the less.

Among other things, I have been thinking lately about the fact that some munchkins have never played some of the games we host, and that it is quite a pity. Besides, it is quite difficult to find opponents for some of the less common games (Tichu is definitely not one of these). If every munchkin had discovered these games and played them at least once, I guess some of them might even like them, which would make it easier to organize in-town games.

Some of the games I'm thinking about are, for instance, Medina, Fuersten, Meuterer, Verräter... Even if I do not like them enough to spend whole evenings playing only these, I would enjoy such a game from time to time, but when several munchkins are around and we are looking for the game, much too often it is heard "I don't know how to play this one" which finally turns into "Let's go play TA or San Juan instead" (which doesn't mean I do not enjoy TA or SJ).

I'm not too sure about how to organize learning sessions and discovery games. Most of the time I am ready to teach the games I know, when we have enough time ahead, but it may be better to try and organize such sessions in advance (which allows people to read the rules first). Maybe by planning them on this board? Maybe during EC days? I don't know, but maybe someone has further suggestions?

If life is a game, God made it a quite complexe one. He must have had a hard time working it out. The big question is: if it IS a game, shouldnt we take the small things less serious and have some fun?

Brillllliant ideas, Munchkins!

We discussed town to town tournaments last year when Nicias was "in charge" and we never did get very far by this.. But: we started EC Day!!

I am with Esterio - to force the less played games in town will fill more of those almost empty game rooms.

So let's start teaching and training lessons!

"Teachers" apply in this forum and announce a time when you will have enough time to care with a bundle of fellows in town...

We can post this sessions in the cmotd, too.

reikja, who is willing to learn (and there are still some games i don't play besides CS..*gg*)

I do like the idea of an in-town tornament. I am willing to organize an in-town tournament of anygame! We would be ulta-low stress, and depending on how many people want to play and the format of the game, we could do interesting things (round robin tournmanets, team tournaments, balanced tournaments {3 games of PR changing starting positions for example} )

Is anyone interested in this? If I get a couple of yes's, I will start a new thread.

Yes Yes Yes

To all the above!

The tichu marathon was just an idea to get things started and i admit it was the most obvious one Wink.

Thanks a lot Nicias for offering to organize some in-town tournaments, if you need help, just let me know.

I like the tournament idea...

Hmm... Maybe we could have a Game of the Month where each month we try to play a game a lot more than we usually would. January has already been Caylus month (sorry E), so let's not pick it again this year :-)

There's a lot of good ideas in here.  I would like a game of the month as well.  There is a lot of games on this site that would be good to learn.

I agree -- lots of great ideas!

Game of the Month
Awesome! We could randomly pick one of the games we have in town (probably exclude the most popular games). Someone could do some teaching on EC day, and we'd all get a chance to play extra games throughout the month. Might even work well to have 2 games each month, since I know some people don't like certain games.

Teaching Games
I always love learning new games, but it's sometimes challenging to find someone who has the time to teach, especially for games that require several players. Again, this could fit nicely into EC Day.

Tournaments
I like the idea of ultra-low stress in-town tournaments. These can be challenging because players need to commit for the length of the tourney, but as long as they're kept under 2 hours it shouldn't be too hard. I have to negotiate quite heavily with my wife just to make it to EC Day each month. Wink

/Elttil considers quitting his job and hanging out on BSW all day.

Hey, not knowing how to play a game has never stopped me! The last few days have been a lot of this

szwanger: let's play a game rat
ratpfink: ok
szwanger: do you know such-and-such?
ratpfink: no, but you can teach me Smiley

szwanger is an excellent rules explainer as well!
